Films:
Shakespeare on film begins in 1899 with Beerbohm Tree's King John, quickly
followed by Sarah Bernhardt's performance in the "duel scene" of Hamlet (1900).
Hamlet is the most frequently filmed of all Shakespeare plays: Rothwell and
Melzer list 80 versions in their 1989 filmography Shakespeare on Screen. Silent
Hamlets appeared in 1907, 1908, 1910, 1913 (the Forbes-Robertson production
included in this site),1917, and 1920 (Svend Gade directed, with Asta Nielsen
in the lead). Other major Hamlets include Olivier (1947), Kozintsev (1964),
Burton/Gielgud (1964, a film of the stage version, included in this site), Zeffirelli
(1990) and Branagh (1996).
