Description: Quotation at foot: 'Mon destin me crie de le suivre ... lachez moi, Messiurs, ou par le Ciel, je ferai un fantome du premier qui m'arretera.' The battlements at Elsinore. In the distance the castle keep. To the left in the middle ground the Ghost in armour with his visor up walking towards the left rear. He has a truncheon in his left hand which he rests on his waist just above the hilt of his sword, and with his right hand he beckons. His head is turned over his left shoulder so that he may look back at the central group of three figures in the foreground--Hamlet, Horatio, and Marcellus. A very young-looking Hamlet moves in the direction of the Ghost, his right arm extended in that direction. He wears black with a chain around his neck from which hangs a miniature or a chivalric insignia. Horatio attempts to block his way, while Marcellus, though staring towards the Ghost, places his hand around Hamlet's waist as if to hold him back. The lithograph is signed and dated ('Eug. Delacroix. 1835.'). The depiction of Hamlet and his pose in reaching forward towards his disappearing father seems to illustrate his instinctive desire for reunion.
