This version of the archive contains images for all First Folio pages, including variants (click on thumbnails for variant pages). Quarto images, art images, and film clips are available for Hamlet ONLY.
Don't click while materials are loading. Watch progress bar at bottom of screen.
When you select a play, the Folio images come up as a default. For Hamlet, you can select other materials using the toolbar at the bottom of the screen.
After you have selected a collection -- folio, quarto, art images, or films -- clicking on the line numbers will synchronize those materials. The page image collections will adjust their position on the screen so that the image is APPROXIMATELY juxtaposed with the text. In some cases, you may have to scroll the image down to find the exact match. Text/image alignment is reversible: you can also click on page images to synchronize the text. In the case of the ART collection, clicking on a line number will bring thumbnails of relevant artwork to the screen, as well as a larger image of the FIRST image in the list.
If you need to look at two or more images on the same screen, click on the window icon in the tool bar. When you return to the first image, the "new window" will disappear, and can be brought to the screen by clicking on the image file name in the TASK BAR at the very bottom of the screen. The image file name may not look familiar, but it will always be to the RIGHT of other buttons on the TASK BAR. If you open several images in new windows, each will appear as a separate button. At present FILMS cannot be opened in separate windows.
The search capabilities for the initial installation are very basic. For free search of a text window use CONTROL-F. Remember to click in the text window first. For other searches and selections, click on the SEARCH icon in the toolbar.
Use the + and - buttons in the Toolbar to Zoom in and out. If you want the largest image area, open an image in a NEW WINDOW and then enlarge that window.
For the first installation, the Hamlet art collection is linked to text ONLY by line number. Later installations will permit you to search by artist name, date, medium, etc. When you click on a line number, the images associated with that line in the ALAN YOUNG DATABASE will appear as thumbnails. If there is no image associated with that line number, the screen will display images linked to a range of 40 lines -- 20 lines above and below the selected line. If there are no images in this range, a notice to that effect will appear.
The Quarto collections work very much like the Folio collections -- texts and images will synchronize when you click on the line numbers or on the images. Note that the THUMBNAILS in the Quarto collection do not indicate VARIANTS, but rather different COPIES where available. The current installation contains the Huntington copy of Q1 (one of two extant copies), and the Huntington and Folger copies of Q2 (two of seven extant copies). We have digitized the remaining six copies of Hamlet Q1 and Q2, and these will be added to the Archive pending permissions. The Archive is constructed so that you can align any text with any image collection. You can search the Folio text, for example, and find the Q1 page images that most closely correlate with that text -- but note that in the case of Hamlet Q1, differences between this edition and the others are so extensive that many lines will not have an exact correlation. The surest way to locate specific passages in the Q1 page image collection is to search the Q1 transcription.
When you select a clip, basic controls will appear on the screen that allow you to Play/Pause, Stop, and scroll ahead or back within the clip. Additonal control buttons allow you to step frame by frame, to go to the beginning and/or end of a clip, and to define a start and stop point so that you can replay a portion of the clip.
