Description:
To left of centre stands Hamlet, legs wide apart, forward, facing slightly right. His weight is back on his rear foot to left and both arms are raised and extended, palms up, towards the Ghost at right. He wears black doublet and breeches and a short cloak. Behind him at left are two figures in soft hats and reddish garments (Horatio and Marcellus). The Ghost at right stands with feet slightly apart, his right ankle slightly raised as though he is turning to the right. His body faces forward, but his head is turned to the left towards Hamlet. His right arm is extended across his chest to the right. In his right hand he holds a truncheon and points with it off to the right, indicating he wants Hamlet to follow him. The pose is reminiscent of Fuseli. The Ghost wears armour and a helmet; the visor raised. All the figures seem to be standing close to the edge of the platform, beyond which can be seen the sea and the full moon, half setting (or rising) on the horizon at centre.
